Article Abstract:

The Dept of Defense's major initiative will be focused on developing technologies to detect and destroy weapons of mass destruction. Chemical, biological and nuclear weapons are increasingly being developed by terrorist groups and rogue governments which do not respond to deterrence.

Resurgent mosquitoes, dengue in Cuba

Article Abstract:

Cuba appears to have failed in its effort to eradicate Aedes aegypti, a disease-causing mosquito breed. An epidemic of dengue fever is spreading in Cuba, causing as many as 30,000 cases and 20 deaths. The Cuban eradication program, which used military personnel, began in the 1980s.

Interfering with atoms to clear a path for lasers

Article Abstract:

A team of researchers led by Steve Harris has developed the first method for eliminating self-focusing in laser beams. The technique uses a blue laser beam to guide an intense ultraviolet beam through a lead vapor medium.
