The elusive goal of machine translation

Article Abstract:

Statistical machine translation methods have proved to be more effective than other types of automated machine translations based on rules written by human translators. The new methods take advantage of the brute-force calculating power of machines to crunch through existing translated texts to determine the probability that a word or a phrase in one language matches that in other.
