The rebirth of a station
Article Abstract:
The Grand Central Terminal in New York is being renovated by GCT Venture Inc to become more user-friendly. The $175 million renovation project aims at transforming the station into a mini-shopping center with a 14,000 sq m space allocated for retail stores, restaurants and cafes. Parts of the project are the construction of two banks of escalators outside the historic area of the terminal and the abolition of a battery of offices to enhance Grand Central Terminal's sky ceiling. The pipes sound off
Article Abstract:
Engineers are using acoustic emission technology as tool for analyzing the state of prestressed concrete cylinder pipes used in the $4 billion Central Arizona Project. This technology requires the use of hydrophones, a signal processor and communication cables to identify and locate distressed wires. As a result, the structural integrity of a pipe can be improved even without removing the said pipe from service.
