Most species of birds considered native to Canada actually spend most of the year in southern countries. These birds travel thousands of kilometers each year between Canada and Central and South America without stopping to feed.

Crossbills are specialized, seed-eating Cardueline finches. Their habitat is defined by the presence of cone-bearing trees. Crossbills are so named because their beaks are shaped for eating conifer seeds, their main food.
