The smaller the better

Article Abstract:

This article discusses a new approach for expanding or upgrading wastewater treatment plant facilities, where space is a constraint. Addition of buoyant plastic carrier elements to the sludge basins coupled with the integrated fixed-film activated sludge technology leads to expansion of the plant from 5.4 to 8.0 mgd. Furthermore, suspended carriers can be added to existing aeration basins, to upgrade an activated sludge.

The case for cleaning

Article Abstract:

This article discusses the problem of sanitary sewer systems overflow during heavy rainstorms and why they occur. While water inundation of the system is a trigger, in most cases poor maintenance of sewer lines is the culprit. Local governments are to take necessary steps for routine cleaning of the sewer lines and also put in place sewer system management programs.

Demolition by design

Article Abstract:

A precise scheme had to be drawn up to protect the sewer pipes, and underground telecommunications and electrical lines before demolishing a big parking garage in New Haven, Connecticut. The scheme called for the reuse of material from the site and a lot of used tires.
