Calling a Truce
Article Abstract:
The French Socialist government appears to be abandoning President Mitterrand's campaign promise to create 'a great unified, secular public education service', which would allow state control of France's 10,000 parochial schools. Resistance to this endeavor has been overwhelming. Currently the government subsidizes private schools, but has no authority over them. The Socialists are offended by this policy. A public opinion poll reveals that seventy-nine per cent of those surveyed favor the present system. A compromise between church and state education leaders may result in the government having some influence on how state subsidies are used, but the system would remain basically unchanged.
