Thread of evidence

Article Abstract:

Researchers at University College London are seeking to develop a surface quality monitor (SQM) that will be able to give an estimate of the remaining active life of a component. It would indicate the condition of the component's protective surface layer, prompting retreatment or replacement where required. The research will initially focus on magnetic field measurements in threaded components, but a monitor of this kind would have a wide range of potential applications.
