Unified environmental statute concept gains support

Article Abstract:

Sens. Christopher Bond and Barbara Mikulski's proposal to develop a single environmental statute to unify the many media-specific environmental laws received strong support from politicians, government agencies and NGOs. In a proposal submitted to the National Environmental Policy Institute, Bond and Mikulski discussed the effects of having many environmental laws on EPA regulatory procedures. It cited that a single statute will increase the efficiency of monitoring programs such as pollution prevention and improve the enforcement of laws.

Report blasts NAFTA environmental legacy along U.S.-Mexico border

Article Abstract:

The Public Citizen consumer advocacy group has published a report claiming that environmental conditions have worsened along the US-Mexican border two years after the passage of the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The report laments that the NAFTA's environmental side agreement and the Commission on Environmental Cooperation are ineffective. NAFTA supporters counter that no clear evidence has been forwarded to show a link between the agreement and increased pollution.

House bill cuts DOE environmental research, remediation funds

Article Abstract:

The House of Representatives has passed a GOP-sponsored appropriations bill which calls for substantial cuts in funding for several Dept. of Energy (DOE) environmental programs. DOE officials and observers state that the spending cuts will have a severe impact on the agency's research and remediation efforts. Although the Senate has yet to pass its own DOE appropriations package, many believe that the cuts are already a foregone conclusion.
