Unresolvable endings: defective telomeres and failed separation

Article Abstract:

A study by Karen Kirk an colleagues showed that defects in a chromosome's telomeres can hinder mitotic chromosome separation. The differing roles of telomeres are discussed, and canonical telomeres such as in Tetrahymena are compared with Drosophila melanogaster's noncanonical telomeres.

Telomerase and DNA end replication: no longer a lagging strand problem?

Article Abstract:

Telomerase acts to solve the problem of the inability of conventional DNA polymerases to complete the replication of the leading strand of DNA. This contradicts the former theory that the lagging strand was the area affected. Two models that explain the new theory are presented.

Telomeres draw a crowd at Toronto cancer meeting

Article Abstract:

Researchers reported the first successful attempts to isolate the components of telomerase, an enzyme that makes telomeres and plays a role in cancer. Discovering a telomerase inhibitor could provide a mechanism for halting tumor growth.
