Wheels of change: advances in automotive technology promise cleaner, more fuel efficient cars

Article Abstract:

There have been significant changes in automotive technology which are driven by environmental regulatory requirements, the market preferences of American car buyers and the opportunities presented by new technology. Manufacturers' compliance with EPA regulations regarding clean air, safety, fuel consumption and real-world emissions has resulted in the development of cleaner, smaller and more fuel efficient cars. Other developments include the creation of alternative automotive fuels and fuel cell vehicles.

Gas may be answer to world's fuel needs

Article Abstract:

Natural gas is likely to emerge as the world's primary energy source during the first half of the next century. Fossil fuel releases carbon dioxide and methane in the air which has serious environmental implications but an abrupt shift from fossil to renewable energy source will result in serious social and economic dislocations. Natural gas releases less methane and about one-half of the carbon dioxide than coal and oil, and thus can serve as a 'bridge' fuel till society moves to renewable-energy use.

Can U.S. support of research fuel economic gains?

Article Abstract:

Studies conducted on federally supported research show that reduction in aid to defense research does not affect private-sector productivity, diversification of aids is the best solution and productivity will not increase if the government support is removed from market signals. Studies estimating the returns of federal research can be categorized into three groups that include econometric studies, cost/benefit studies and qualitative studies but all these studies suffer from limitations.
