Breast cancer screening in older women: ethical issues
Article Abstract:
Ethical issues on breast cancer screening play an important role in the promotion of quality care among patients. Advancing age as well as the poor quality of life foreseen should not be used as basis to forego any screening modalities. The decision to either refuse or accept examinations should come from individuals themselves but if unable to do so then the physician's judgment should be based on patient's medical condition and overall prognosis. In addition, informed consent should be upheld not merely as a legal document but rather a form of respect for life and the person's individuality.

Article Abstract:
Literature determined the absence of specific breast cancer screening guidelines in the field of family medicine for women over 74 years of age. In addition, the primary care physicians's compliance with sreening recommendations were observed to be limited. In fact, factors which contribute to such poor performance in mammography were identified as low yield of screening, high cost of mammography as well as concerns about reliability of diagnostic report and patient compliance. Thus, there is a need to find ways to improve physician as well patient compliance with breast cancer screening.
