So you think you want to lead an academic geriatric program?

Article Abstract:

Leading an academic geriatric program devoted to turning out physicians qualified to practice cannot depend on some one prescription for success, but an approach, based on experience, is offered. It starts with self-knowledge and ways to gain it. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) should be considered.

Revisiting the one-year geriatric fellowship option: a preliminary assessment

Article Abstract:

Opinions of geriatric fellowship program directors on the 1-year clinical training option introduced have been investigated using a brief mail survey of 100 directors. Conclusions indicate the option is at best a mixed blessing for the directors, but there is optimism that likely justifies continuing to offer the option. The field has enhanced strength and attractiveness since 1992 when the 1-year option was introduced. Concern about teaching and research and the preparation of future academic geriatric faculty made for lively debate when the option was originally discussed.

Building academic geriatric capacity: an evaluation of the John A. Hartford foundation centers of excellence initiative

Article Abstract:

The CoE strategy employed by the John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF), the structure and function of Hartford CoE are described and evaluated. The evaluation indicates that these initiatives have been successful in meeting the goal, as measured by the number of geriatricians who have entered and have remained in academic geriatrics, and by their advancement up to the promotion ladder.
