Caring for vulnerable older adults in urban academic medical centers in a managed care environment
Article Abstract:
Medical care for older adults in urban academic medical centers (AMC) is costly, but research shows that a small number of patients - those who were hospitalized or died at AMCs - account for a majority of the costs. AMCs are susceptible to a high number of older patients with severe illness. They are facing pressure from managed care to cut costs, but they have built their reputations on high-quality medical care, which is expensive. The research community must assist AMCs in becoming financially viable and continuing to deliver high quality services.

Medicare Prescription Drug Statement of Principles
Article Abstract:
The American Geriatrics Society Clinical Practice Committee supports adding a prescription drug benefit under the Medicare program. It would be financed by bringing in enough revenue to support costs, without reducing funds for other services. Prescribers should be able to furnish covered drugs for off-label uses. Coverage of medication management and monitoring is import to cut the risk of medication-related problems and errors because inappropriate prescribing and polypharmacy are major causes of morbidity and mortality.
