Circadian heart rate rhythms in Japanese centenarians
Article Abstract:
Circadian heart rate (HR) rhythms in centenarians are discussed based on a study of 50 subjects in Japan. Age-associated changes were studied with the circadian rhythm extracted from diurnal heart rate variations. It was found that the power of the 24-hour period in the centenarians was significantly lower than in the older and younger controls. The power of the 8-hour period was increased with aging and a shift in the circadian acrophase was seen.

Lipoprotein metabolism in Japanese centenarians: effects of apolipoprotein E polymorphism and nutritional status
Article Abstract:
Research indicates that a genetically controlled metabolism maintaining low levels of apo B-containing lipoproteins may be conducive to longevity. Data were obtained from 75 Japanese centenarians and 73 volunteers with a mean age of 63.1 years. Lipoprotein levels were related to the subjects' inflammation markers, apo E polymorphisms, and nutritional status.

What heterogeneity among centenarians can teach us about genetics, aging, and longevity
Article Abstract:
The article examines the role of apolipoprotein E(2) and E(4) in longevity, in an assessment of Japanese centenarians. E(2) was found in the hardier group of centenarians, while E(4) was found in the frailer group, indicating that apolipoprotein E is a key factor in genetic determination of the life span.
