Commentaries on 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse.'(reframing elder abuse as a medical problem)
Article Abstract:
In his article, 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse,' Mark Lachs emphasizes the need to educate physicians by giving elder abuse a medical framework. However, this is unnecessary and the focus needs to be diverted to the contribution each discipline can make to preventing elder abuse. Elder care can be enhanced by addressing the concerns of the family members who are the primary caregivers. Nurses are better equipped to assess elder abuse due to their enhanced knowledge about the family's functioning and less restricted work setting.

Commentaries on 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse.'(increasing physicians' interest in elder abuse)
Article Abstract:
In his article, 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse,' Mark Lachs contends that increasing the interest of physicians in elder abuse requires the use of definitions for its diagnosis and management, and making elder abuse a part of the medical education curricula. Though research on elder abuse is dominated by social scientists, it requires the involvement and perspective of varied disciplines. Individuals interested in elder abuse should be encouraged to study and publish articles with a medical focus.

Commentaries on 'Preaching to the unconverted: education physicians about elder abuse.'(physicians' reluctance in dealing with elder abuse)
Article Abstract:
Physicians are reluctant to deal with elder abuse as they believe it to be outside the domain of medical practice. In 'Preaching to the unconverted: educating physicians about elder abuse,' Mark Lachs argues that the relationship of physicians with the elder's family and the time required for detailed questioning of the victim inhibits detection. Detection can be enhanced by recognizing the role of nurses and addressing the issue in medical curricula.
