Reaping the rewards of NAFTA
Article Abstract:
The experience of National Computer Systems (NCS) demonstrates that careful planning, sound management and realistic expectations can help US companies realize the promised benefits of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). The $330 million information services company used to do business in Mexico through a local distributor, but decided to establish a direct presence in the country even before NAFTA was approved by Congress. During its planning process, NCS found that the most valuable advice came from such sources as the US Customs, trade associations, local legal counsel and local CPAs. Its Mexican subsidiary was established in Feb 1994 despite some problems in recruitment and a delay in obtaining a tax certification number. NCS is already reaping the rewards of being an early entrant into the Mexican market.
