Efficacy and safety of ciprofloxacin oral suspension versus trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole oral suspension for treatment of older women and acute urinary tract infection

Article Abstract:

Ciprofloxacin (CIP) oral suspension has been shown to have higher clinical success and bacteriological eradication rates vs trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazol (TMP/SMX) for community-based and nursing home-residing women, age 65 and up, with acute urinary tract infections (UTIs), based on results of a prospective randomized open-label multicenter study involving 261 subjects evaluated for safety and 176 evaluated for clinical and bacteriological efficacy. Significantly lower rates of adverse events and premature discontinuations were seen for CIP suspension vs TMP/SMX suspension.

Bone loss predicts subsequent cognitive decline in older women: The Study of Osteoporotic Fractures

Article Abstract:

Bone loss has been found to predict cognitive decline in older women. A prospective cohort study involving 4,462 women 70 and older was carried out to investigate whether the rate of bone loss predicts cognitive decline independently of baseline bone mass and whether apolipoprotein E (ApoE) genotype explains the association.

Screening mammography: is it suitably targeted to older women who are most likely to benefit?

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the utilization of mammography services by aged women, to assess if breast cancer prevention services are effectively targeted to groups most likely to benefit. Findings suggest that aged women may underutilize screening mammography services.
