Encoding and memory for visible speech and gestures: a comparison between young and older adults
Article Abstract:
The relationship between language processing ability and aging was analyzed. The reactions of younger and older adults on visual articulatory movements of the face were compared. Results showed that levels of comprehension and recall were greater among older adults when sentences contained visible speech. Gestures did not significantly improved older subjects' ability to recall. Findings indicate the importance of visible speech when relaying messages or information to older adults.
