Testosterone improves rehabilitation outcomes in ill older men
Article Abstract:
A randomized placebo-controlled, double-blind study has been carried out to find out whether testosterone supplementation improves rehabilitation outcomes in ill men aged 65+ years. Results were found to be positive. Task-specific performance was evaluated using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Grip strength was measured at the beginning and at discharge from the geriatric evaluation and management (GEM) unit based at a university-affiliated Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Insights into the pathophysiology and mechanisms of constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and diverticulosis in older people
Article Abstract:
A MEDLINE search was used to review the epidemiology, pathophysiology and mechanisms of irritable bowel syndrome, constipation and diverticulosis in those over age 65. The prevalence of constipation and diverticulosis is higher in older adults than in younger adults, and significant risk factors for constipation in older women are listed. IBS prevalence is no greater than in younger adults. Functional status and quality of life are affected by the various symptoms, and it would be well for primary care physicians, geriatricians and gastroenterologists to collaborate for the best management of the three conditions.

What is the relevance of a systematic review of pharmacological management in irritable bowel syndrome to older people?
Article Abstract:
The authors synopsize an article on the benefits of smooth muscle relaxants for treatment of irritable bowel syndrome when abdominal pain is the primary symptom. They include a commentary calling for individual drug trials or studies of drug classes to provide more robust conclusions regarding issues of efficacy.
