Letting the patient backstage: informed consent for HMO enrollees
Article Abstract:
HMOs and other managed care organizations should reveal more information to potential members about loyalty clauses, discrepant roles of physicians, and who actually makes the medical care decisions. Most HMOs do not reveal this type of 'backstage' information to members. And so most members believe their physician makes the decisions and their physician is always on their side. They are also not aware that their physician signed a gag order limiting what he or she could tell the patient.

The future of the doctor-payer-patient relationship
Article Abstract:
Managed care organizations must realize that the best way to ensure quality care is to strengthen the physician-patient relationship. Up until 1921, there were no effective non-surgical treatments like antibiotics or insulin. The treatment consisted of the physician-patient relationship. Drugs and diagnostic techniques are effective in treating acute disease, but most diseases are chronic. And chronic diseases are treated by the patients themselves under the supervision of caregivers.

The influence of patient age on primary care resident physician-patient interaction
Article Abstract:
Research into the interaction between physicians and patients to determine if interaction differs depending on patients' ages is presented. Results indicate older patients spend more time with physicians checking on their compliance with earlier treatments and plans but are questioned less regarding counseling, substance use, families, and health habits.
