Lower incidence of tardive dyskinesia with risperidone compared with haloperidol in older patients
Article Abstract:
Tardive dyskinesia (TD) occurs at a lower rate with risperidone than with halperidol in high-risk older patients based on a prospective longitudinal study in a outpatient psychiatric clinic studying the 9-month cumulative incidence. Mean age of the 61 subjects was 66 years and they were matched with 61 patients from a larger sample of haloperidol-treated patients. Among them were patients with schizophrenia, mood disorder, dementia or with conditions exhibiting other psychotic symptoms or severe behavioral disturbances. Median daily dose of each medication was 1.0 mg.

Management of the older person with atrial fibrillation
Article Abstract:
Management of the person older than 60 with atrial fibrillation (AF) requires treatment of the rapid ventricular rate when it occurs. Underlying disease should be treated when possible. Candidates for mitral valve replacement should have surgery when that is possible. Management of AF in the elderly has been investigated through a computer-assisted search of the English-language literature online and a manual search of bibliographies, and the findings are reviewed.

Silent ischemia during voluntary detraining and future cardiac events in master athletes
Article Abstract:
Exercise-induced silent ischemia after a period of 3 months of detraining in highly-trained older athletes may be a predictor of future cardiac events. A longitudinal study of a cohort of ten master athletes has been carried out, with 5 to 8 years of follow-up, but a larger study may be warranted.
