Outcome of older patients with severe pneumonia predicted by recursive partitioning

Article Abstract:

Recursive partitioning can be used to predict outcome for older patients with severe pneumonia based on a nonconcurrent prospective study in a 24-bed intensive care unit in two university-affiliated tertiary care hospitals. Patients required mechanical ventilation on admission to the ICU, were age 75+, and numbered 104. A classification tree was developed to predict discharge, and it showed a superior predictive accuracy vs that of logistic regression and APACHE II. The tree is useful in giving a concise summary of local outcome experience and prognostic information to patients/surrogates.

Radiographic resolution of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia in the elderly

Article Abstract:

The radiographic clearance of community-acquired bacterial pneumonia in older patients is investigated. The radiographic resolution should take into account the extent of lobar disease and the burden of underlying illnesses.
