Barriers to effective communication in skilled nursing facilities: differences in perception between nurses and physicians
Article Abstract:
Communication between nurses and physicians working together in nursing homes may be hindered by several misconceptions. According to questionnaire results of 59 nurses and 47 physicians, only physicians perceive nursing competence as a significant barrier. Nurses, on the other hand, find physicians unpleasant but not vice versa. Both nurses and physicians were aware that physicians do not value the opinion of nurses. Gender inequality and differences in professional status may account for some of these perceptions.

Managed care as a vehicle for delivering more effective chronic care for older persons
Article Abstract:
Chronic illnesses will grow as the population ages. Health providers should recognize the need for a better system that improves care for chronically ill patients. Some changes in the current system should include an approach to chronic care needs to become more aggressive and an information system that focuses clinicians' attention on changes in patients' status.
