Prevalence, incidence, and risk factors associated with hip fractures in community-dwelling older Mexican Americans: results of the Hispanic EPESE study

Article Abstract:

Results of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiologic Study of the Elderly (H-EPESE) are discussed relative to prevalence, incidence, and risk factors associated with hip fractures. The prospective survey was carried out in a regional probability sample of 2,895 community-dwelling Mexican Americans older than 64. The group has the highest risk among Hispanic subgroups for this problem, which is significant for public health. Prevention measures should be in place.

Correlates of prescription and over-the-counter medication usage among older Mexican Americans: the Hispanic EPESE study

Article Abstract:

Studies reveal that elderly Hispanic Americans use fewer medications than other ethnic groups. Prescription medicine usage was found to be lower in men, while both genders had low usage levels of over-the-counter medicines. These findings can be attributed to varying accessibility to medications whether through location or insurance restrictions, and differences in medication preferences and cultural concepts of survival.
