Acculturation and psychological distress in three groups of Hispanics
Article Abstract:
The relationship between acculturation and psychological distress was studied in three gorups of elderly Hispanics who have migrated from Mexico,Cuba and Puerto Rico. Constructs and correlates developed from a conceptual model showed that financial strain and social isolation are intervening mechanisms that may link acculturation with well being later in life. A nationwide survey of elderly Hispanics also showed that the levels of psychological distress vary across the different groups and may be due to the complex interaction between education level, language acculturation, financial problems and social isolation.

Early parental loss and personal control in later life
Article Abstract:
The association between early parental loss and feelings of personal control among older adults was assessed from a nationwide survey of 519 older people and through a latent variable model of early parental loss and personal control in late life. Analyses of the model showed that early parental loss is associated with lower levels of educational attainment and that those with limited schooling are more likkely to have financial problems in later life. Increased financial strain is associated witha decline in feelings of personal control among older adults.
