Subclinical hypothyroidism in a biethnic, urban community
Article Abstract:
Subclinical hypothryroidism is common in older people, especially women, living in a biethnic urban community, not an institution, and it is more common in the community's non-Hispanic white (NHW) women than in the Hispanic women. The association between hypothyroidism and health status of older Hispanic and NHW people, both male and female, has been studied in New Mexico. Effects of subclinical hypothyroidism were seldom significant and seemed to have no effect on any measures of health status utilized in the study until serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was above the 10 milliU/mL level.
