Breast cancer screening for older women in a primary care practice

Article Abstract:

Over 80% of 130 elderly women seen by a primary care practice located in a teaching hospital received a mammogram over a two-year period. This high mammography rate was partly a result of a computerized mammography ordering and tracking system used in the clinic.

Mammography use, breast cancer stage at diagnosis, and survival among older women

Article Abstract:

Older women who undergo regular mammography are diagnosed with an earlier stage of breast cancer and are less likely to die from it based on findings of a retrospective cohort study using the Linked Medicare Tumor Registry Database. Use of regular mammograms in older women is beneficial and can reduce death, even for those over age 84. Women over age 64 account for most newly diagnosed cases and deaths, but are least likely to have mammograms. Data are from three geographic areas and are from women older than 66 having a first primary breast cancer.

Surgical outcomes for patients aged 80 and older: morbidity and mortality from major noncardiac surgery

Article Abstract:

A prospective study on postoperative mortality and complications for patients aged 80 and older is presented. Surgical outcomes of patients in the Veterans Affairs National Surgical Quality Improvement Program indicate that 30 day mortality was at 8 percent for patients with major surgery; however mortality was less than 2 percent for more common operations.
