The associative-memory basis of cognitive skill learning: Adult age differences

Article Abstract:

Comparison of learning rates for the same set of stimulus pairs as skill problems (SK) in one condition and as paired-associates (PA) in another condition showed that the age deficit in SK can be accounted for by the age deficit in associative memory. Analysis of fast and slow retrieves in SK and PA showed that the frequency of fast retrieves did not differ in the two conditions.

Cognitive skill acquisition and transfer in younger and older adults

Article Abstract:

A series of tests was conducted for studying the acquisition of cognitive skills and the effects of age on this process. Benefits of repetition were attributed to retrieval of instances and algorithmic speedup, while response-time speed improvements were attributed to item retrieval.

Cognitive skill learning: Age-Related differences in strategy shifts and speed of component operations

Article Abstract:

Older adults acquire cognitive skills more slowly than the younger adults and usually do not reach the same asymptotic level of skilled performance as younger adults. The age-related delay in strategy shift suggests either reluctance to use retrieval or an associate memory deficit.
