The impact of urge urinary incontinence on quality of life: importance of patients' perspective and explanatory style
Article Abstract:
Elderly patients may have a different perspective on urinary incontinence than physicians do. Researchers created focus groups from among 25 women and 5 men who had urinary incontinence to determine how the disease affected their quality of life. They identified 32 incontinence-related quality of life issues, over half of which had never been identified. The patients were more concerned about embarrassment and coping skills than interference with activities.

Age-related differences in management of heart disease: a study of cardiac medication use in an older cohort
Article Abstract:
The very old may not receive adequate medication for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. A comparison of 407 heart patients in 29 hospitals showed marked differences in prescribing patterns. Patients who were older than 74 years old had fewer prescriptions of appropriate medication, such as ACE inhibitors, aspirin, and warfarin, than those aged 65 to 74 years old. The reasons for this age bias should be further explored.

Income-related differences in the use of evidence-based therapies in older persons with diabetes mellitus in for-profit managed care
Article Abstract:
In a study of 301 geriatric patients in a managed care plan in the Los Angeles, California vicinity, patients with incomes of less than $20,000 annually did not use as many medications for diabetes-related conditions as patients whose income was over $20,000. Inability to afford co-payments for numerous medications may explain the reduced medication use of low-income patients.
