Completed suicide among older patients in primary care practices: a controlled study
Article Abstract:
Research to determine what distinguishes aged patients who commit suicide from those who do not is presented. Results indicate aged suicide victims suffer more from depression, physical illness, and functional limitations than other aged patients, which indicates primary care physicians should be trained to diagnose and treat depression in the aged.

High levels of hopelessness persist in geriatric patients with remitted depression and a history of attempted suicide
Article Abstract:
Suicide attempts were found to be associated with acute feelings of hopelessness after treatment of a depressive episode in geriatric patients. The study of 107 outpatients with a mean age of 67, indicated that cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal therapy may be an effective treatment for reducing suicide risk.

The importance of subsyndromal depression in older primary care patients: prevalence and associated functional disability
Article Abstract:
Subsyndromal depression and its importance in older primary care patients have been studied for information about its prevalence and associated functional disability. It was found that depressive conditions are common and associated with considerable functional and medical morbidity in the patients, but many with significant symptoms are now found by criteria-based syndromic diagnostic categories. Studies in the future should include intervention investigation of subsyndromally depressed elderly and of biopsychosocial factors of diagnosable and subsyndromal depressions.
