The relationship between cognitive/neuropsychological factors and car driving performance in older adults
Article Abstract:
A correlational study of 84 car drivers older than 65 years were referred for a general fitness-to-drive evaluation to study the relationship between cognitive/neuropsychological factors and car-driving performance in older adults. Initial results show relevance of a cognitive/neuropsychological approach to the driving ability of older people. The link with accident risk appears to be more complicated. Neuropsychological screening procedures should have broader perspective to prevent overemphasizing unidimensional screening focusing mainly on deficit. Capacities for safe behavior are a factor.
