Visual impairment and falls in older adults: the Blue Mountains Eye Study

Article Abstract:

Visual impairment may increase an elderly person's risk of falling. Researchers gave vision tests to 3,299 people 49 years or age or older. Problems with visual acuity and contrast sensitivity were linked to an increased risk of two or more falls, as was a diagnosis of cataract. Macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy were not associated with falls.
