A comparision of methods to obtain active parental consent for an international student survey

Article Abstract:

Many school-based research efforts require active parental consent for student participation. Two methods are compared for obtaining active parental consent, return of consent forms in the mail versus return by students to their classrooms. Survey of randomly selected 46 schools suggests that the student-delivered method produce higher rate of consent form return and agreement.

No news is bad news: characteristics of adolescents who provide neither parental consent nor refusal for participation in school-based survey research

Article Abstract:

Schools offer a convenient research setting for adolescents. Survey in a 6th-grade smoking study, where 4427 students were recruited with two consent procedures: 3358 students (76%) were active parental consent and 649 students (15%) implied parental consent. The implied consent procedure recruited more boys for this survey.

Assessing the effects of a school-based intervention on unscheduled school transfers during elementary school

Article Abstract:

This article examines school-based intervention programs for problem children and their influence on unscheduled school transfers. The authors, comparing intervention and control schools, conclude that students in intervention programs were less likely to transfer out of their original school.
