The aesthetic

Article Abstract:

A study enumerates the key points of the formative prehistory of the concept of the aesthetic, and traces three major modern tendencies in construing the aesthetic. It critically examines the idea of aesthetic disinterestedness and discusses the contrasts between the concept of art in Western modernity and in pre-modern and Asian culture.
