An unprecedented step in the effort to end sweatshops
Article Abstract:
An Apparel Industry Partnership formed in 1997 developed a Workplace Code of Conduct dealing with such issues as forced and child labor, compulsory hours of labor, and discrimination. It also proposed ways of monitoring countries which adopt the Code. The Partnership also committed to an independent association with both apparel companies and human rights groups which would oversee compliance with the Code. This is an industry plagued by rampant human rights violations, so having the agreement is precedent-setting.

One small step for women: helping torture victims heal
Article Abstract:
The Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture in Chicago uses art-making to break down barriers to self-expression faced by Cambodian women that were tortured by the Khmer Rouge. Because of limited English skills and cultural conditioning, these women are note inclined to share their feelings, making therapy more difficult. Working on art allows the women to engage in nonverbal expression that can provide therapists with a window.

Double jeopardy: victims of domestic violence face twice the abuse
Article Abstract:
Women who experience domestic violence need employment protection. Employers often terminate abuse victims because they miss work or even out of fear for the abuser. Federal legislation protecting an abused woman's economic rights will provide women the ability to remove violence from their lives and be self-sufficient because they will have ample legal and economic support.
