Autarkic drug discovery in Japanese pharmaceutical companies: insights into national differences in industrial innovation

Article Abstract:

Structured interviews with eight leading Japanese pharmaceutical companies and industry data show that drug discovery in Japanese companies occurs predominantly in-house. Autarkic innovation may no longer be compatible with global competitiveness and it may be a characteristic of most Japanese technology based manufacturers.

Institutional frameworks and innovation in the German and UK pharmaceutical industry

The governance structure impact on the innovation capabilities of leading German and UK firms in the pharmaceutical industry is analyzed. The aim is to show how variation in national institutional frameworks influences the innovation process and its relative performance.

An international comparison of sectoral knowledge bases: persistence and integration in the pharmaceutical industry

Article Abstract:

An analytical, unifying theoretical framework is proposed to compare sectoral knowledge bases across countries. The concepts of knowledge persistence and knowledge integration are developed as the relevant dimensions along which knowledge bases can be compared.
