Behind the rising meritocracy: market, politics, and cultural change in urban China
Article Abstract:
Three competing theoretical perspectives namely, the market perspective, political perspective and cultural perspective, resulting in a clear trend of rising meritocracy in China in the allocation of rewards and career opportunities are analyzed. The findings of the data collected from two southern Chinese cities, Shanghai and Guangzhou, lend support to the market and cultural perspectives.

Barriers to subsidies: why low-income families do not use child care subsidies
Article Abstract:
Many families fail to utilize the child care subsidies they are eligible for; as parents' felt that they either did not need or were not eligible for subsidy. Developing better methods for disseminating information regarding subsidy eligibility and reducing barriers connected with specific subsidy regulations will help to overcome this failure.
