Article Abstract:

This article examines the factors influencing occupational attainment and stratification. The author maintains that while family background, education, gender, and cognitive ability influences occupational attainment, career upward mobility as one ages becomes less influenced by education and family.

Changing patterns of cigarette use among white and black youth, US 1976-2003

Article Abstract:

The varying influence of family background and social activities on individual's tendency to smoke is studied. Results conclude that white youth with highly educated parents and those who frequently go out are more influenced compared to black youth.

Socioeconomic reach and heterogeneity in the extended family: contours and consequences

Article Abstract:

The variation and socioeconomic reach of the kin networks of extended families are analyzed. Results indicate a strong status relationship, suggesting that vulnerable individuals are less likely to have access to family support.
