Human rights and the rule of law in Hong Kong: disturbing developments
Article Abstract:
The consultation document "Civil Liberties and Social Order," released by the office of Hong Kong Chief Executive-designate C.H. Tung, reveals that China's takeover of Hong Kong threatens the freedom of assembly and association in the Special Administrative Region. The proposals would require police approval for peaceful public demonstrations and licensing of non-governmental organizations. These changes are in conflict with the Basic Law and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The human rights of sexual minorities: a comparative and international law perspective
Article Abstract:
The UN Human Rights Committee's recognition of the rights of sexual minorities demonstrates the gains made by gay and lesbian political activists in many countries and exposes the weaknesses in US human rights laws. The international laws protecting sexual minorities can be used in domestic courts of member nations to combat discrimination and violence against lesbians, gay men and bisexuals. US policies are becoming increasingly untenable in light of these advances in the international community.
