Collaborative, pre-competitive R&D and the firm
Article Abstract:
A study of the advanced information technology program of UK Alvey was undertaken to analyze the nature of cooperative and non-competitive research endeavors within a firm. It was assumed that evaluation could not depend on conventional measures such as financial return on investment and other short-run measurements. The attitude of other firms within the industry and long-term processes relevant to knowledge acquisition are considered more important in finding out the effectiveness of a intrafirm research activity.

Research and development, human capital and trade performance in technology-intensive manufactures: a cross-country analysis
Article Abstract:
A study of 52 countries' recent economic achievements indicates that investment in technology-intensive industries has a greater impact on a nation's welfare than does similar investment in its educational institutions. Actual indicators of technological activity, in the form of patents awarded and industrial research, were greater marks of success than a country's educational efforts. Although education was not deemed unimportant, it must take a secondary role to the enhancement of trade in technological fields.
