Communication efficiency
Article Abstract:
A number of sophisticated communication services are available to the public for improved communication efficiency. Carrier transport services, for instance, enable the speedy transmission of varying volumes and types of information from one point to another. Customers can arrange to have this communication service permanently, when service between two points is often needed, or on-demand, when the service is required only occasionally. Switched service is a special kind of on-demand service which allows customers to choose when and where the service is needed. Among the switched services available to customers are Switched 56, Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN), Broadband ISDN, Frame Ready, Switched Multi-megabit Digital Service or SMDS, and T1, Fractional T1, or T3 Leased Line. These services are described briefly.

Network administrators: what they do, why you need them
Article Abstract:
Local area networks (LAN) need to be managed by people who understand the technology. In many organizations, LANs are administered by non-technical office support personnel. The discrepancy between the sophistication of technology used and the technical knowledge and skills of administrators can create difficulties. At the very least, inadequate technical knowledge can hinder the use of LANs to the fullest extent. Aside from possessing the technical knowhow needed in maintaining and overseeing everyday LAN operations, managers should be able to facilitate the easy use of networks by inexperienced users. They also should conduct research to find more efficient backup systems and new LAN applications that will contribute to the speedier accomplishment of tasks.

Telecommuting can help H/CD agencies
Article Abstract:
Telecommuting offers a viable answer to the increasing pressure to make the workplace more responsive to the the changing needs of employees. Concern for the environment and energy use, the demands of parenting, dependent care, and health, and the desire to save on travel time and cost make working at home highly attractive for many employees. Telecommuting enables workers to perform their jobs away from the office through the use of PCs hooked to their companies' main computer systems. With the use of local area networks telecommuters gain access to information and the ability to communicate with other people and to transmit records and files. The flexibility that telecommuting offers can lead to higher employee productivity and job satisfaction.
