Conflict research as schizophrenia: the many faces of organizational conflict

Article Abstract:

Conflict management research is portrayed as schizophrenic and a holistic study of conflict management is recommended. Current research in conflict management has three levels of analysis and three perspectives each promoting a specific model over another. Each level of analysis and perspective is mutually exclusive. An integration of the research would entail different parameters of research questions and the construction of a multi-perspective. Possible benefits are the formulation of a means for evaluating theory and the heuristic potential inherent in this project.

Conflict and conflict management: reflections and update

Article Abstract:

The chapter on conflict and conflict management in the 1976 Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology has been rewritten to reflect the refinements developed in conflict and conflict management since the book's initial publication. There is still no universal definition of conflict. The two-dimensional taxonomy of conflict-handling modes has been validated. The research on conflict management has increased dramatically leading to refinements focusing on cognition especially on the structural and process models of conflict.

Reflections on organizational conflict

Article Abstract:

The model that presents organizational conflict as an aberration in a harmonious environment is found to be inadequate to explain numerous phenomena implicit in an organization. A new model is proposed wherein conflict is the essence of an organization, that the organization is the setting for such conflict and the executive's function is to manage the conflict to achieve the organization's goals.
