Demand for part-time workers in the U.S. economy: why is the distribution across industries uneven?

Article Abstract:

Some industries in the US employ a large number of part-time workers, while other industries have only a few. This condition is a result of differences in labor costs and job descriptions among industries. The characteristics of the industries themselves also affect the employment of part-timers. One significant factor which discourages the employment of full-time workers is the high cost of some employee benefits, particularly health-care plans. Industries which experience higher costs of turnover employ less part-time workers.
