Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis: guidelines, issues, and alternatives

Article Abstract:

Organizational experts believe that researchers must be able to specify the goals and establish a definite priori theory for their studies before a particular analytical technique should be adopted. Although exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) have their inherent weaknesses, the former is best suited for scale development purposes while the other yields optimal results if applied in data analysis. Experts also agree that CFA may efficiently be used to determine the casual connections that exist among variables while EFA focuses on the use of eigenvalues as dimensionality parameters.
