Impact of rural industrialization on village life and economy: a social accounting matrix approach
Article Abstract:
There have not been many studies on the effects of industrial decentralization on rural development in Indian economic development. The impact of decentralization of industries on rural development is investigated by examining two similar Indian villages, Boriya and Aurepalle. This research contradicts the view that decentralization has a very limited effect on rural development. Results show that decentralization has alleviated poverty in Boriya. Industrial decentralization is the most effective policy in effecting overall rural development.

Rural development and dynamic externalities in Taiwan's structural transformation
Article Abstract:
Equitable distribution of income in Taiwan is the main reason why the country has been widely acclaimed as a model of balanced economic growth. In turn, land reform has been cited as the primary factor behind the equitable distribution of income in the country. However, there are other factors behind Taiwan's balanced economy. These include the creation of agricultural research, extension and support organizations, significant investments in rural infrastructure projects and giving incentives to farmers.

State as investor and state as owner: consequences for firm performance in India
Article Abstract:
A study of 1,100 firms listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange indicates that state-ownership of Indian firms influences the performance of the firm under certain conditions. When property rights devolve fully to the state, firm performance as measured by return on assets and return on sales is influenced by state ownership. Passive investment by the state does not generate significant returns. The concept of mixed enterprise should thus be reconsidered.
