Inheritance, steady-state consumption inequality and the lifetime earnings process
Article Abstract:
Inheritance is commonly seen as tending to increase inequality, yet some economists see it as reducing consumption inequality because it can smooth the impact of earnings inequality. Analyses of the impact of bequests give different results according to which model is used. Models using the linear bequest function show inequality being reduced. Piecewise linear models show different results according to the marginal propensity to bequeath, levels of earnings mobility between generations, and levels of earnings inequality.
