Institutions and the map of science: matching university departments and fields of research
Article Abstract:
Analysis of Australian university data reveals that the use of performance indicators at the departmental level obscures important features of modern research that is characterized by a high level of interdisciplinary research. The study also points out that efforts to introduce system-wide evaluation of research could leave interdisciplinary research and institutions yet unorganized at a comparative disadvantage so there is need for the use of field-coded research information.
