Integration of computer hardware/software
Article Abstract:
Finding ways to integrate computer hardware and software, both 'physically' and 'functionally,' has been a major preoccupation of many private, governmental and quasi-governmental organizations. There have been numerous attempts to physically integrate computer system but none have generated a satisfactory way to make such computer connections complete. For instance, efforts in the 1980s to develop integrated systems for small Local Housing Authorities were unsuccessful, resulting in increased hardware downtime, slow system software user response times and other inconveniences. It is becoming clear that the traditional practice of attempting physical integration before functional integration must be reversed. Since the requirements of functional integration arise from the organization's internal and external communication needs, they must therefore be the driving force behind the evaluation and selection of physically integrated systems.

PHA automation evolution
Article Abstract:
Public housing authorities can improve their efficiency through the use of management information systems (MIS). A MIS is an integrated computer system that decreases the repetition of data entry by allowing information entered by one department to be entered into the databases of other departments that are affected by the newly entered data. An MIS facilitates the transmission of data between departments by making the output of one department the input of another. A MIS allows management to obtain real-time data on operational activities and to create daily status reports. While a MIS is more costly than a non-integrated computer system, it compensates for the higher expense by increasing the operational effectiveness of PHAs.

Integrated computer systems: the key to improving PHA management
Article Abstract:
Public housing authorities (PHAs) can improve the efficacy of their management by implementing management information systems (MIS). MIS are integrated computer systems and should contain embedded management control systems (MCSs). A PHA can greatly increase its efficiency through the use of an MIS with an embedded MCS. Areas that will be improved by an MIS include operations, ordering, and maintenance. An MIS improves the timeliness of information and disseminates the information to all parties that are affected. The MCS is a homeostatic device that serves to prevent mistakes by the users of the MIS. MCSs incorporate safety devices into the MIS that work independent of the users' need to activate the safety devices.
