Jobs, housing, transportation: a balance through mediated fair shares
Article Abstract:
The 'Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anyone' (BANANA) concept is increasingly taking the place of the 'Not In My Back Yard' (NIMBY) phenomenon. This attitude seems to be most prevalent in areas with the greatest need of low- and moderate-income housing. The objection of communities to public housing is economically detrimental since it can lead to zero economic growth, scarce fiscal resources, high unemployment, outflows of human and capital assets, and decomposing infrastructure. Past imbalances that have led to severe water quality and sewerage problems, spreading mobile air emissions and inordinate job decentralization can never be resolved if the BANANA and NIMBY mentality persists. A proposed solution to this dilemma is the creation of a 'jobs-housing balance.' This scheme involves matching households by income with job structure by skill and wage scales through time.

The Lansing plan: an alternative affordable housing approach
Article Abstract:
The Lansing Housing Commission in Lansing, MI, is testing the viability of an innovative homeownership program designed to allow low-income residents of public housing to buy their own homes. The alternative approach to home purchasing considers the problems of affordability and obtaining assistance from financial institutions, and offers a mechanism that will make the dream of homeownership a reality for the poor. The Lansing Plan also aims to turn public housing residents into independent tax payers, raise potential tax revenues by restoring foreclosed properties, revitalize deteriorating neighborhoods, and make public housing units available to a greater number of needy families. If successful, the program will not only help low-income families but will also boost the economic development of the local community.
