Liverpool: from a city of its port to a city with a port

Article Abstract:

The city of Liverpool, England, is moving from an industrial phase into a post-industrial phase that is reflective of a changing economic structure occurring at both the global and national scale. The investments made by the city in refurbishing its waterfront area have served to spur economic development. These include an enhancement of the centrality of the city of Liverpool and an integration of previously abandoned regions into the urban landscape.

Regularity and change in urban space: a syntactic analysis of movement and co-presence in Atlanta

Article Abstract:

Space syntax analysis of the patterns of movement and spatial configuration of a city such Atlanta, GA, reveals an emerging urban growth pattern that will threaten to create new organizational forms but will ultimately cling to basic spatial principles. The old city center, far from slipping into what was earlier described as a chaotic growth pattern, is seen as slowly coalescing into a recognizable urban structure with other newly established cities.

The dispersed city

Article Abstract:

The suburb has emerged from its beginnings as an enclave for the elite to a dominant structure in modern metropolitan designs. The advent of the idea of the suburb was also responsible for the prevalence of images of dangerous inner cities and the prospect of boring daily travel to and from the workplace. The diametrically opposed ideas of the suburb and the city, however, are one in their rejection of a densely-populated urban center.
